This guide covers how to set up and manage point systems for your tournament series, ensuring fair and transparent competition standings.
Point System Basics
A well-designed point system is crucial for maintaining competitive integrity in your series. Spicerack offers flexible options to match your specific needs.
Creating a Point System
- Navigate to your series in the admin dashboard
- Select the Point Systems tab
- Click Create Point System
- Choose from available templates or create a custom system
Point System Types
Standard Points
The most common approach:
- 1st Place: 10 points
- 2nd Place: 8 points
- 3rd Place: 6 points
- 4th Place: 5 points
- 5th-8th Place: 3 points
- Participation: 1 point
To configure:
- Select Standard Points as your system type
- Adjust point values for each placement tier
- Save your configuration
Weighted Points
Points scaled by event size or importance:
- Select Weighted Points as your system type
- Configure base point values
- Set up event tiers (e.g., weekly, monthly, championship)
- Define multipliers for each tier
- Enable or disable attendance scaling
Points based on match performance rather than final placement:
- Select Performance Points as your system type
- Assign values for:
- Match wins
- Game wins
- Draws
- Bonus points for undefeated runs
- Configure any multipliers or bonuses
Custom Points
For specialized scoring needs:
- Select Custom Points as your system type
- Build your formula using available metrics
- Set conditions and point values
- Test your system with sample data
Managing Standings
Viewing Current Standings
- Navigate to your series
- Select the Standings tab to view current rankings
- Use filters to segment data by:
- Division
- Region
- Time period
- Custom tags
Tiebreaker Configuration
Set rules for resolving tied point totals:
- Go to Tiebreaker Settings
- Arrange tiebreakers in priority order:
- Head-to-head record
- Event wins
- Match win percentage
- Game win percentage
- Strength of schedule
- Custom metrics
Manual Standings Adjustments
For special circumstances:
- Find the participant in standings
- Select Adjust Points
- Enter the adjustment amount and reason
- Submit the change (all adjustments are logged)
Points Decay and Expiration
For long-running series, configure point decay:
- Go to Advanced Settings
- Enable Point Decay
- Configure options:
- Linear decay over time
- Sudden expiration after set period
- Rolling window (only count recent events)
- Set the decay/expiration timeframe
Standings Display Options
Customize how standings appear to viewers:
- Navigate to Display Settings
- Configure:
- Columns shown (rank, name, points, events, etc.)
- Records displayed (wins/losses, etc.)
- Data visibility restrictions
- Export options for participants
Automated Communications
Set up standings-based notifications:
- Go to the Communications tab
- Create triggers based on standing changes:
- Qualification achievement
- Rank milestones
- Points thresholds
- Configure message templates
- Enable or schedule automated sending
Analyzing Point Distribution
Gain insights from your standings data:
